In
1984 with the readily available new OS mapping I set out to compile
a list of the 2000' hills of England and Wales. 10 years later
I added Ireland, with the publication of the new 1:50000 mapping
by the two Ordanance Surveys.
This was before Anne and John
Nuttals books and the TACIT tables. I chose to extend Donald's
tables furth of Scotland, as they have a height/distance rule
well suited to the rolling terrain often found outside the Highlands.
Donalds Rule.
A Hill is more than 17 units
from higher ground(Donald said summit, but I have changed this
for accuracy, see Herman Law in the Ettrick Hills. )
A top is 100' or more above the col, or 50-100' if of sufficiaent
topographical merit. This weeds out the daft tops listed in the
A&J Nuttall books, but allows goodies like Pillar Rock,(
sadly not Scafell Pinnacle or Napes Needle, but you can still
do them)
A unit is 1/12 of a mile or 50'. Don't worry about metrication..
Donalds are measured in units!
