The Loughcrew Hills. The West top from the path up to the summit.

The big cairn at the summit. The chamber is open in the summer.

Another view of the summit, in the foreground is a cairn that has been dismantled. Sadly most of the Loughcrew complex have been damaged.

A view westward from the top, towards West Meath and Longford. In the foreground is another ruined cairn.

Those who want to see fine neolithic monuments without enduring the circus at Newgrange can come here. This hill has no TV mast, but a fine collection of huge chambered cairns. We grabbed a quick ascent between showers for a big view. This is a very central location and you can see a long way from up here.

As for the cairns, sadly they were not open, being outwith the summer, but having the site to ourselves on a wild day made this a very special experience.

To date this was the biggest cairn I had seen, but this record was to be beaten by Knocknarea, by Sligo, two days later.

Slieve na Caillaighe/Sliebh na Calli is the highest hill in the rather flat Co. Meath
