A pair of similar hills passed
by the hordes heading for higher and more snowy stuff further
up Glen Shee.
Mount Blair was reputedly a
favourite of Sir Hugh Munro and is still a popular walk for locals.
Sadly its been trashed by a huge mobile phone mast which is visible
for miles. There is also a new toposcope in a horseshoe which
is charming, bearing witness to the viewpoint qualities of isolated
conical hills.
Duchray Hill is less individual,
merging more into the Mounth to the north. Again a good viewpoint,
especially up Glen Shee from the cairn. This shows the true extent
of the glen, the A93 sneaking off up a side glen to the skislopes
, out of sight.
The two can easily be done
together from the road between them, I retired to the car for
lunch before the almost trivial stroll up Mount Blair. Be warned
however, Duchray (also known as on the OS, but nowhere else it
seems as Meal na Letter, is moated by a particularly unpleasant
marsh. Once the swamp is passed its a doddle.
Mount Blair would make a good
summer evening hill, but try to avoid the path marked on the
OS maps, It's a trashed vehicle track made by the vandals who
stuck the mast up.
