Sunrise on Stob Dearg.
Close up of the buttresses and gullies, of the main climbing area of the Buachaille.Taken on the way to our route, Curved Ridge. Binnien Mor, Binnein Beag and Sgurr Eilte Mor from the waterslide area. This highly entertaining pitch is normally buried under snow. In lean conditions, it provides an extra pitch to the route.
It was the only good ice of the day. Mmmm Ice!
The skyline is Curved Ridge.
Above the ice now, and above the normal first pitch of the ridge. Beinn a Chrulaiste in the background. Can you spot the climber? An easy section of the ridge, things were about to get harder with deep powedery snow. The top of Crowberry Gully 'Tower Gap'. Rannoch Moor, with the distant 'skerry' of Schihallion. Sron na Creise casts a shadow towards the Kingshouse. The Summit. Climber, Andy Clarke. Sunset over Bidean nanBian and Ardgour. The dark trench is Glencoe.
An uncomfortable descent was worth it for this amazing sunset.
Map: Stob Dearg The holy of holies, the very heart of Scottish mountaineering. Not often do you get this sort of weather here on a January Saturday. The hill was quiet, it was also very much out of 'nick'.
Our route was Curved Ridge which goes in most conditions, and proved alot harder than my last ascent. Then it was plastered in ice and neve, now it was lean low down, and plastered in powder high up. A good time was had by all.
The sunset was not bad either.
