Stuchd an Lochain from the col with An Grianan.
Glen Lyon. Pubil and An Grianan (864m). a major top of Stuchd an Lochain. Neighbouring Sron a'Coire Cnapanaich seen on the ascent. View across Loch Giorra/Daimh to Ben Meggernie An unusual view of Beinn Dorain - above Loch Lyon. The simple cone is Beinn Mhanach. The east face of Beinn a'Chreachan. The western side of the summit cone from the top Meall an Odhair (815m) The Eastern side of the summit cone. The view westward from just below Meall Odhair.
The guidebook pudding haters tend to be very enthusiastic about Stuchd an Lochain because of its sharpish summit pyramid and deep corrie. Then they go back to slagging off the rest of Glen Lyon.
Everyone seems to go up from the Lochs dam - its quick, and gives a free afternoon to bag on the other side, but teh southern approach makes a fine horseshoe with a second biggish hill thrown in - ideal for top collectors.
An Grianan was quite tiring but a lovely descent made up for it, until we found ourselves stuck on the wrong side of a deep gully carrying the Allt Camaslaidh. No cheating on the hydro road - but an easy descent down the open hillside.
The day was enhanced by close up views of ptarmigan and a couple of brocken spectres - above all there were the distant clear views and an end to the constant rain and wind of January 2005.
