The Southern Upland Way passes below Capel Fell en route for Ettrickdale.

White Shank, a top on the east ridge of Capel Fell.

The Unmarked summit of Capel Fell with Carrifran Gans and White Coombe beyond.

The fine Croft Head from Capel Fell's Summit. Why do they name hills after cricketers?

In the opposite direction is the range's highest hill Ettrick Pen.

Croft Head again, this time from the Selcoth ravine on the Southern Upland Way. The slopes on the right belong to Capel Fell.
The westward view from the West Knowe of Loch Fell. Queensberry, The Lowther Hills and on this side of Annandale, Scawd Law.
The summit, East Knowe, of Loch Fell. Now the ridge turns east, towards Ettrick Pen.
Wind Fell from down in Ettrickdale , this top is crossed between Loch Fell and Ettrick Pen
Ettrick Pen from the last col on the ridge.
At last, the substantial cairn on the summit of Ettrick Pen.
Westward from Errick Pen. The forests of Eskdale lap against Loch Fell and Queensberry pops up behind Croft Head.
Back in Ettrickdale, Ettrick Pen can be easily reached between the forest blocks.

A quiet corner of southern Scotland. Just north of the Lake District, a long ridge pof fine grassy hills with big views. This was a short day around the head of Ettrickdale, taking in two of the big four, Croft Head is an easy addition if required.

From Ettrickdale the forestry is not a problem, easy rides and tracks lead to the ridges only 250m above the glen floor. This was my 5th visit to these hills, and the first time that I actualy met anyone.
