Uamh Bheag from Beinn Odhar
Glen Artney. On the way up Beinn nan Eun. Beinn Dearg(706m) in the background. ![]()
The bogs on Beinn nan Eun. Am Beannan, a steep spur from Uamh Beag. Stuc a Chroin and Beinn Vorlich in the background. Uamh Beag trigpoint.
Probably on the 3rd highest bump. Higher ground over the fence to the north, and the current 'official' summit is 600m further west.
The 664m OS summit. Beinn Clachach summit area, with the big stone. Glen Artney and Mor Bheinn Ben Vorlich and Meall na Fearna above Glen Artney. Map: Uamh Bheag Not quite in the Highlands, this unusual group of sandstone hills, with a faint touch of the Brecon Beacons about them, have now been placed in Donald's Tables. Glen Artney may be in many ways a Highland Glen, but these hills are definitely different to any over the fault.
First up was Beinn nan Eun, a grassy slog from Artney Kirk and capped with 'bogs that make Kinder a garden' as Hamish Brown would say. Follow this with Beinn Odhar which sees the end of the bogs, a sharp transition to grassland. Across a wide corrie, is the highest hill Uamh Bheag with a collection of tops, easy going now, if you avoid the Beacon like Am Beanan with the shaley old red sandstone screes.
Finaly the big stone of Beinn Clachach, a Fingalian putting stone.
Glen Artney was a welcome contrast to the claggy uplands. The soft glen is rich in flowers and waders. A perfect place for a summers day.
