The Gargunnock escarpment runs for ten miles above the flatlands of Flanders Moss. Its the defences of the vast boggy plateau of the Gargunnock, Fintry and Campsie Fells. Following the edge is a good day, if you can find some easy going along the way.

Carleatheran's summit is a pimple above the escarpment, and a long way from the easy points of access. Approaches from the south are discouraged by the tussocks and bogs, there is far better drainage next to the basalt crags.

I went up from the far eastern end, climbing above the vast bracken fields of Touch Muir and eventually passing a dove cote to find an easy quadbike track to the summit. The calcium rich soils give the vegetation a Yorkshire Dales feel and its very green up here. Great views northward to the Highlands across Flanders Moss.

A similar track comes in from the west from the Spout of Ballochleam.
