Once an offshore island, now joined to Harris by a strip of
machair. Ceapabhal is a rather rough and steep landmark. You
can begin your ascent at a white sand beach and struggle upwards
through heather and boulders to a grassy summit. As you might
expect the view is very fine, with North Harris and Taransay
to the north and all the skerries and sandy islands of the Sound
of Harris to the south. North Uist and Bernaray show well from
here as well. Unfortunately this time there was no St Kilda,
the islands were hiding in the clouds.
I went up after 36 hours of rain, and the last rain was still
falling as close as Leverburgh while I was up there. I was in
sunshine, but the east was always black. |
