Another
hill suited for a short day in heavy snow. Beinn Stumanadh is
a last gasp of the big hills, isolated beyond Loch Loyal. After
Stumanadh and Clach Ruadh, all is flat bogland, the great blank
of the Flow Country.
Beinn Stumanadh
is a very fine hill. Because of its northern location the vegetation
zones are shifted down in altitude and the summit tundras are
as wild as anything in four figures further south. The summit
plateau made of frost shattered gravels covered in dwarf willow.
Classic tundra.
Again the view
is out of all proportion to the modest effort required to obtain
it, I think the walk along the beach is the hardest bit of the
day, but very enjoyable, there being few unspoiled lochs the
size of Loch Loyal. |
