Meall nan Clach Ruadh in the distance, from the shores of Loch Loyal..

Clach Ruadh from the slopes of Beinn Stumanadh.

 Looking down on Tongue.

And in the other direction, Hoy beyond Sutherland's North Coast.

The Summit Cairn, Southward to Ben Griam Beag(Left) and Ben Griam Mor(Right), beyond Borgie Forest.

The great view continues. Beinn Stumanadh, and in the distance, Ben Armine.

Further to the right is a great aspect of Ben Loyal, but this was lost in the midwinter sun.

Map: Meall nan Clach Ruadh

Moving up to the North Coast, and after Altnaharra, the depth of snow had shrunk to almost reasonable ammounts. Vast plumes of spindrift were blown of Ben Klibreck and five cars were parked in Strath Vagastie. Sooner them than me...

I only had an afternoon, but that was time for the quick dash up Meall nan Clach Ruadh on a very clear day. This is a very impressive viewpoint perched above Tongue, and gave a view of the coast from Cape Wrath to the north of Mainland, Orkney. Hoy stood out very well and the red of the big sea cliffs was very clear. To the south was a good selection of the isolated Sutherland Hills dotted over a white sea of bogland. The contrast between the very hilly Reay Forest and the flat Flow Country was very striking. Here and Stumanadh is the end of the big hills. From The Mull of Kintyre to here the West of Scotland is continuously rugged. Now that ends to be replaced by the wild and lonely peat lands of The Flow Country and Caithness.
