New year
2002 was cold and very snowy. Of course the deep snow, blocked
roads and impossible hillwalking was soon replaced by a huge
thaw, by January 10th all had gone.
First footing
was achieved with skis as far as a rough track below the summit.
I made the mistake of walking the last few hundred metres as
the track was narrow. It soon opened up into fine open pine forest.
It was hard work walking in both directions. While skiing uphill
in deep powder was very time consuming, the return in the tracks
gave a fast and enjoyable descent.
The windswept
summit was too cold to linger, but the views were fine, looking
down on the rigs in the Cromarty Firth. From here you could appreciate
the quality of this fine harbour with its deep water passage
at Cromarty. The Cairngorms were well displayed to the south
and there was a good close up of the unfamiliar north side of
Ben Wyvis and the Kieldermorie Hills. |
