Baggers Album->England->41->Hardown
Hardown Hill from the summit of Golden Cap.
The flat top is flanked by chert and sand quarries. Everything is overgrown with gorse and brambles. The Summit: In amongst the heather is some serious gorse. Gaiters are a good idea.
The highest point is a dyke, but the natural summit is probably in the middle of the photo.
Map: Hardown Hill This hill is not nearly as well known as its southern extremity. Thousands make the easy ascent of the chert and greensand top of Golden Cap, the hill with the big landslip cliffs that dominates Lyme Bay, but I expect only a few continue thrpugh the straggling village of Morcombelake to the gorse covered chert plateau of Hardown Hill.
The hill is a drive up. The unscrupulous can bag a quickie by driving up Loves Lane(the white road above 'PH' on the map) to the mast, but we did a circuit taking in Golden Cap and Chardown Hill., priceless.
Spring had sprung, bluebells and a quite a few summer arrivals were about. Lunchtime music was provided by a tree pipit. Golden Cap was busy but enjoyable, a wee girl busied herself by shepherding beetles off the path, lest we step on them. Young children will not like Hardown though, the gorse is very very prickly.
Lovely views to the north, especially of Lewesdon Hill and Pilsdon Pen.
