The highest point of Barden Moor, a vast grouse moor above Skipton. The hill is well known for high quality gritstone crags such as Rylstone and Crookrise, but the summit is rarely visited. Such a trip requires doing battle with serious heather. The ascent was made by an old packhorse road from the totaly out of the way village of Thorpe, famed in Nicholas Crane's Two Degrees West. The return was through Appletreewick and Burnsall, quite different with hordes of day trippers. This was one of the hottest days of the year, and I was glad to have the chance to spend some of the afternoon in the Wharfe. |
