Above the Eden Valley , the Pennines form a high steep scarp. Obviously a major fault, the scarp is broken by a series of small igneous hills. One of them has enough drop behind it, thanks to that old favourite of the Marilyn bagger, the glacial meltwater channel. This is the Pennine Way landmark of Dufton Pike (the way sneaks round the base. After the steep pull up to the tiny cairnless summit, I continued on to a wanted 2000' top, Backstone Edge and, too tired for Meldon Hill I returned by the Pennine Way at High Cup Nick. |
