The Rainbow Range is a group of vividly coloured volcanic hills just behind the coastal ranges of British Columbia, Canada. Access is either by one of the World's great ferry journeys. The Discovery Coast route of BC Ferries Port Hardy to Bella Coola, or by a 400km road from Wells Lake. Then from the roadhead at the top of the infamous 'Hill', a couple of days each way will get you into the hill. The gabbro hill is an easy walk up, but its hard avoiding all the flowers that cover it from treeline to summit. The views are fine from the flatlands of the Cariboo to the glaciated giants of the Coast Range. Mount Waddington could be seen on the way out, from Crystal Lake at the top of the Boyd Pass. Travel was easy due to the horse trails, but the bugs were trying. (Background is MacKenzie Tartan) |
