Another wooded height, but birch and pine this time.

The original target, Koula on the Bulgarian Border. This looks a good hill, high enough for extensive meadows and with deep glens on either side.

This is gorge country and this huge dolerite crag overlooks the celebrated Lividhatis Waterfall.

 The upper falls.

And the main falls. This is a good winter climb.

The Summit and trig.
Abandoned ski lift, just below the top.

Map: Paranoia rules in this troubled corner. No maps. We managed with afaxed forest road sketch map. Quite an adventure.

Above Stavroupoli a new road climbs 1200m to the alpine village of Lividhatis.Beyond the village is the huge forest, wilder than further east with no villages. The roads are being upgraded, but are still very rutted. We could only penetrate 6km into the forest so rather than slog along the road for a few hours, we chose to do the hill above the falls. Erymanthus.

An easy walk, similar to an ascent of the Wrekin, but utterly wild. Above the beeches are pines and alpine meadows. Good views down into the gorges, it was only Wrekin sized from the South, on three other sides steep slopes plunge 1200m to the rivers. Views over into Bulgaria, suggests more intensive land use with a big tower and large clearings.
