The two beech clad summits from a forest road near Kalithea .

The hill rises above deep gorges. Some arable farming continues here, mostly tobacco. There are numerous hill villages, now getting new roads.

The ridges are dry and scrubby, and give reasonable going.

The saddle between the South and main top. This is summer grazing.(and a spring flower meadow)

The summit. Yes its a trig point.

Looking eastward towards Oreo and Sminthi.
 One of the locals.

Map: Paranoia rules in this troubled corner. No maps. We managed with afaxed forest road sketch map. Quite an adventure.

A forgotten corner of the Balkans, the Rodhopi Mountains behind the city of Xanthi in Eastern Greece are covered in vast forests of oak and beech, and this one gave quite a challenging ascent. Scrambly ridges covered in beech forest gave hard going. The few paths, were covered in drifts of old beach leaves, and impossible to follow.

To the east of the hill are many villages above terraced fields. Often only the minaret could be seen above the forest.

The hills were not the most exciting, but a vast beech wood in May is irresistable, and the gorges are very impressive. The woods are still home to bears and wolves and the birdlife is spectacular.
