A forgotten corner of the Balkans,
the Rodhopi Mountains behind the city of Xanthi in Eastern Greece
are covered in vast forests of oak and beech, and this one gave
quite a challenging ascent. Scrambly ridges covered in beech
forest gave hard going. The few paths, were covered in drifts
of old beach leaves, and impossible to follow.
To the east of the hill are
many villages above terraced fields. Often only the minaret could
be seen above the forest.
The hills were not the most
exciting, but a vast beech wood in May is irresistable, and the
gorges are very impressive. The woods are still home to bears
and wolves and the birdlife is spectacular.
